Balance. Harmony. Creativity. Trust. Serentiy. Wisdom. Power.
When I began teaching myself the art of gel lighting photography (or cinematic lighting in general) I quickly realized the incredible importance of color.

Well, obviously David, it’s gel lighting and the whole thing is about color.
Moving along with my Captain Obvious – I was experienced in looking at colors for our portrait clients and guiding them to the right choices. Going to a wooded area with beautiful fall color? I suggest wearing something in the blue family. Want something that feels visually different and artsy in your images – wear colors that are analogous to the primary.
When I started using color as the only light source instead of white light, the first pairing I went to was orange and teal as that is commonly used in filmmaking. I was excited because the work I was doing as a photographer even more closely aligned to my instincts in cinematic storytelling.

After a time, I realized that while I was pleased with the work I created, it didn’t fully resonate and I became frustrated. It was like the answer was just out of reach and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what it was.
Then I began to reflect on the words I wanted to feel not only in my life at the time, but in the work I produced. Taking the typical genre of subject in gel lighting I asked myself what words did I associate to sensuality?
Balance. Harmony. Creativity. Trust. Serenity. Wisdom. Power.
Or in other words, magenta, purple and blue.

Each color has emotion associated to it and it plays out in our ever day lives. Leaders wear the color red to symbolize their power. Healers often wear the color green or blue that symbolizes calm and healing.
What emotions are you feeling in your life? What do you want to feel instead?
A whole world of possibility.
