Dare to Fail Greatly | Denver Boudoir Photography

As a photographer based in Denver, boudoir photography has always been a genre I admired from afar. However, for a long time, I hesitated to fully embrace it. The fear of failure was overwhelming, especially the fear of wasting time, money, and energy on something that might not work out. I had to look no further than my two beautiful children to punish myself for failure – before I even took a step.

Ironically it was my children and my responsibility as their father that turned the tide. If I don’t show them that I can dare to fail greatly, then they might not feel the courage to do the same.

When I first began exploring the idea of offering boudoir sessions under the name “Legend by David Byrd,” I felt a deep sense of unease. What if my clients didn’t respond? What if the shoots didn’t turn out the way I imagined? The thought of investing in new equipment, props, and marketing materials for a style that felt so foreign to me seemed like a huge risk.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the only way to grow as an artist was to challenge myself. It’s frightening to put your work out there in new ways, and there were definitely moments when I doubted whether I was capable of pulling off something as intimate and nuanced as boudoir photography. Still, I pushed forward. I allowed myself to experiment with new lighting techniques, angles, and poses—each session became an opportunity to fail and learn. Through trial and error, I gained confidence and began to understand what truly resonated with my clients and with my own artistic vision.

I’ve learned that if I never take risks, I’ll never reach my full potential as a photographer. Rather than letting the fear of failing hold me back, I’ve come to accept that failure is simply a steppingstone to improvement. As I continue to grow with “Legend by David Byrd,” I’m more determined than ever to keep pushing the boundaries of my craft. I would rather fail greatly, learning and evolving along the way, than stay stagnant and never push myself to explore new styles and ideas. In the world of boudoir photography, courage is key, and with it, I’ve unlocked a new level of creative freedom.
